Picasa review

Picasa is an intuitive and well-designed application that allows you to manage, edit and share your photos with ease. It’s an efficient way to organize your data, as well as create backups and synchronize it with an online account.

Picasa is owned by Google and has sharing options for Google+, Blogger, and YouTube. All edits are easy, thanks to intuitive controls, so it takes very little time to get your photos sorted on your computer.

Functionality 4,5/5

Picasa can be well used without an Internet connection, although you can fully enjoy all the features only when you are online. The application is specially tailored to help you keep all photos organized, regardless if you need to sort them by album, date or another type of information.

Aside from the fact that Picasa is a powerful photo manager, it also provides some nice editing functions. It enables you to crop and resize pictures and also add various effects to enhance image quality.

The application can automatically synchronize your library with Picasa online account so that you can share photos with your friends with just a few clicks. There are also a backup function, a batch editing script, a picture collage creator, a folder manager and many other useful features.

Design 4/5

Picasa has an attractive and easy-to-use interface with straightforward commands. It opens into the Library view like most other image-editing applications and allows you to double-click at any thumbnail image to open up an Edit window.

The stacked lists of Albums, Folders and People are to the left, where the folders are pointers to your pictures’ locations on the computer. The downside is that the Folders are permanently in disarray and displayed neither alphabetically nor according to the original tree organization.

Usability 4/5

When you first run Picasa, you will get only one choice: whether to use the application as your default photo viewer. Then at the lower-right side of your screen, you'll get notifications as all the photos in all the folders on your computer are integrated into Picasa's database.

In earlier versions, the initial run asked whether you wanted Picasa just to scan your My Documents, My Picture, and Desktop folders or your whole computer for any added photos, but now it makes this decision for you. On Windows, you'll also see your iCloud Photo Stream if you have that set up on your iPhone or iPad, but Picasa does not support iCloud on the Mac.

Installation is easy, yet you should pay attention because the setup package comes with some third-party software that can change certain settings of your web browser.

Cross-platform use 4,5/5

Picasa is compatible both with Windows and Mac OS, running on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Mac OS X (Intel only).

In-app purchases

Picasa is a free app that doesn’t require any in-app purchases. You just download it and use with no limitations.

Conclusion

Picasa is one of the top choices for users who need effortless photo management and sharing. The system performance will not be burdened at all, and the response time is quite good. Plus, there are some sufficient features included to keep you busy.

It's a convenient, pleasant software best suited for people who want to quickly prepare their pictures for sharing and not get stuck the editing process. However, if you are not interested in sharing on Google+ and prefer other social networks, you will need to go through extra steps to share your pictures.
