Functionality 5/5

Vuze offers a wide range of features. You can:

  • download torrents via magnet link, URL, hash and torrent file;
  • add RSS subscriptions with an auto-download option;
  • watch downloading videos in the built-in player;
  • prevent sleep mode while downloading or seeding;
  • leave comments and rate torrents;
  • adjust upload and download speeds

Besides, Vuze has protocol encryption, allows to work through proxy servers, supports anonymous data exchange using the I2P, Tor, and Nodezilla protocols, Unicode, IPv6 and UPnP, NAT Port Mapping Protocol and NAT traversal, which provides better performance in the local network.

Design 4,5/5

Vuze has a slick interface with pleasant white and blue color scheme. Though some may find Vuze a bit clumsy, we think it looks nice. There are lots of interface settings, allowing you to adjust color scheme or alerts.

Usability 4,5/5

Vuze has such a stack-load of features that it can be hard to grasp them all. You can set the settings at Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced proficiency level, depending on your needs and experience.

Advanced User proficiency will allow you to bind Vuze to your VPN adapter and make kill switches, so Vuze will detect whether it is running over VPN and will only download when VPN connection is used. You can also implement advanced filtering options for RSS feeds to manage auto-download better - choose only files of a particular size or with certain words in the title to be downloaded.

You can use the tray application in Windows to pause and control the speed of the download without opening the Vuze. Various plugins extend program’s functionality and can be found at the Vuze official website.

You can download Vuze Remote from the Tools menu. It allows to check the progress remotely, control speeds, create torrents or stop existing ones. This convenient tool works through this official link on any mobile browser. Port forwarding setup is required to make this work when you’re outside your network.
There is also a separate Vuze Remote app for Android.

Vuze supports swarm merging, which means it automatically detects when your incomplete downloads share identically sized files and will try to merge the torrent swarms to download the file faster.

Vuze contains s built-in Internet speed test. Launching it with Vuze will determine the required upload and download speed.

If all those features are too overwhelming for you, consider downloading Leap instead of Vuze. Leap is free of all extra features and settings. It supports magnet links, has metasearch and settings for bandwidth control. Leap is completely free of any ads and works only on Windows. It doesn’t support plugins or Vuze Remote.

Note that during installation Vuze tries to install additional programs and change your browser settings. So don’t just click through, but keep patience to read the popping windows and click Decline to prevent such installations.

Cross-platform use 5/5

Works on Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems. There is a Vuze and Vuze Remote app for Android.

Pricing

Vuze has a free and a paid versions. First one contains ads when the paid one doesn’t and costs $29.90. There is also a lightweight free version of Vuze - Leap. It has simplified interface, fewer features, but doesn’t have any ads.

The Bottom Line

If you prefer to have a maximum hands-on control over your torrents, Vuze is a perfect choice. With this feature-rich client, you can transcode files and control your torrents remotely. A great alternative for those who don’t need extra features and just want to download torrents is Leap, a lightweight Vuze’s version.
