With Google Earth, you can see almost any part of the planet in a high resolution looking perpendicularly down, from the bird's eye view or at an oblique angle. Most areas in Google Earth can be shown only in 2D aerial imagery, but some parts of the surface are available in 3D as well.
Google Earth has a wide range of features. It allows you to view basic graphic maps, satellite imagery maps and maps in 3D; find any city, street or house; measure distances; print out the images; save favorite places; use GPS coordinates and much more. You can also browse Wikipedia or Photos layers to obtain more information, and the built-in tour guide will help you during exploration of new places.
The Street View will make you feel like a real walker because with this feature you’ll be able to look at the realistic sights of the streets and houses, walk around and check looks from different perspectives and feel like you’re almost present there.
However, the satellite pictures of some small unpopulated areas might not get updated often. So, if you're looking to see not a highly popular place, you will likely see old pictures.
Google Earth has a Historical imagery feature that lets you go back in time and see all the taken throughout decades images. So you can just select an address and click on over 20 different views of the same address to see a timeline of what the location looked like over time.
Also, Google Earth displays day, night and shadows on any landscape based on the time of day. This option is called Sunlight button, and it lets you change the time of the day. So, with this feature, you can watch the sunrise or sunset anywhere in the world easily.
Google Earth has a multifunctional and intuitive interface. It has navigation controls in the top right part and a large window through which you can view the globe. The controls include a Look joystick that lets you see in all directions from your current location; a Move joystick which sends you in the desired direction and keeps your view pointed; a Zoom Slider that allows you to zoom straight down from above and level off automatically.
Along with the option of zooming detailed images, you can split locations by the interests and mark your favorite places. You can also view your own map as well as placemarks created by others.
To start using Google Earth, you need to download an application (33.1MB), install it and have the Internet access every time you want to use Google Earth because the program streams its data in a real time.
Also, the controls feel pretty intuitive. But to use all your controlling opportunities, you should read the online User Manual first. Once you learn it, navigation won’t confuse you anymore.
